Monica Nelson Bio

Monica Nelson is a longtime singer/songwriter/lyricist
beginning with the Portland based band THE OBITUARIES, which sprung onto the Portland punk/hardcore scene in mid 1986. Her co-written and self written music has been in a handful of musical releases as well as featured on various compilations (mostly out of print) and has made it into 3 independent short films directed by Eddie Casey.
She is founder of WHIRLWIND COALITION which supports grass-roots activism and spreading the word towards helping those sickened in the aftermath of Sept. 11th 2001 or as George Tabb has referred to it in interviews: ‘CHERNOBYL ON THE HUDSON’.
Nelson is curator of, and has been asking for help gathering information
for PORTLAND UNDERGROUND MUSEUM which is devoted to archiving
in some way every single underground band from her hometown that have predominantly played/currently play original music.
A few years back she began exhibiting her paintings and photographic work work although music and song writing has always remained her main focus
even if she flies under the radar.
Having performed original material live with various talented musicians and bands along with the periodically resurfacing Obituaries she’s been for the last 2 years happily working in in league with accompanist / arranger Lenny Hat for the past two years playing live shows on the East Coast and knee deep at work on a full length recording. After she releases that and the great full length recording she co-wrote and sang on in San Francisco produced by onetime band mate Jason Lally she figures maybe she can afterwards sell a few poetry books too because it’s all about the money and the shoes baby!
